1. The first tagger and his followers 5. Famous graffiti artists

2. A false stereotype 6. Different reasons to draw

3. Graffiti’s ancient roots 7. Silent messages

4. A reasonable compromise

A. Painting and writing on walls has existed since prehistoric times, when people in Africa and

Europe used to paint pictures of animals and people in their caves. Graffiti has been found

On buildings at archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, Syria and Iraq. In the Roman town of

Pompeii, archaeologists found numerous samples of graffiti written in Latin which had

Religious, political and romantic messages, and even some magic spells!

B. In the 1970s, young people in New York began writing their names, or “tags,” on walls

Around the city. The trend was started by Demetrius, a teenager from a Greek family. His tag

Taki 183 was on walls all over his neighbourhood. Then he switched to subway stations and

Trains. Kids began to imitate Taki 183, writing their tags in as many places as possible. Soon

Walls, buses and subway trains were covered with them: Kathy 62, Jerry 182, etc.

C. Graffiti was really popular in places where people had something important to say but did

Not have the opportunity to speak. Instead, they posted their thoughts on walls, where other

People could see them. This was their only way to appeal to crowds and address their ideas

To them. Graffiti writers tried to express themselves creatively to attract attention and make

Sure their messages were read by as many people as possible.

D. Due to the fact that graffiti became particularly popular in poor and disadvantaged areas of

Cities, people often thought that it was connected with street gangs and hooligans, but in

Most cases this was not true. Usually graffiti is not gang-related at all. Gangs traditionally

Used signs to mark their territory, but graffiti artists used their drawings to express

Themselves. Their artwork takes lots of time, effort, and creativity.

E. In the 1990s graffiti and street art, which was already very popular in the United States,

Began to grow in popularity around the world. Some artists wanted to send political

Messages. They produced pieces of art that made people think about how unfair wars,

Inequality, social problems and discrimination were. Other street artists drew pictures just to

Make their surroundings look nicer. For this reason, graffiti often appeared on ugly grey

Walls and abandoned buildings.

F. What is graffiti – art or vandalism? In many countries, writing or painting on public or

Private property is illegal, and street artists are stopped by the police. On the other hand, in

Some cities, city councils and artists have come to an agreement. In Taiwan, for example,

There are special “graffiti zones” where anyone can paint and write on the walls. In Sao

Paulo, Brazil, the city council has even allowed some graffiti artists to paint on the subway trains. So, what ’ s your opinion?

AMIMALS IN THE CITY.

Small animals like birds, squirrels, mice, cats, and dogs are a common sight in big cities and small towns. But in recent years, there have been lots of reports in newspapers and on television of wild animals coming into cities in bigger and bigger numbers. There have been bears in Vancouver parks, leopards in the streets of Mumbai and wild pigs in Berlin. Why so? What makes them come? Are they welcome, or are they considered a danger?

One of the main reasons wild animals come to cities is that they are looking for something to eat. In Cape Town, South Africa, baboons have started coming into residential areas on the edge of the city to feed. They open rubbish containers, looking for something they can eat, or steal fruit from gardens and orchards. The bravest baboons even come into people’s houses and take sweets, cheese, bread and whatever they can find from kitchen cupboards and fridges! You have to remember that baboons can be aggressive and attack people, so people are not at all happy to see such “guests” in their houses.

In Berlin, Germany, groups of wild pigs also come into the suburbs to look for food. They dig up parks and gardens looking for roots, insects and other small animals to eat. They cause terrible damage to parks and gardens, and can cause traffic accidents when they get on the roads. In spite of this, some city residents welcome the pigs and give them food. They say that people should learn to live with them.

This attitude is not shared by the City Council, whose first reaction was to employ a group of hunters to shoot young pigs. Lots of city residents complained that this was too cruel, and there were heated arguments between hunters and animal lovers. In response to protests, the City Council decided to take more peaceful action against pigs so, instead of shooting them, they have put up fences and made it illegal for people to feed them. Time will tell if this strategy works.

In our opinion, it would be a shame to hurt or kill animals when they come into the cities. Hopefully, city councils, conservationists and the city residents can work together to find practical ways to keep wild animals out of cities without harming them.
